When to play it

Thanksgiving has two long waits for kids: the hour before dinner, when the cousins are wound up and the kitchen is off limits, and the stretch after dessert while the grown-ups clean up. A ten-item hunt fills either one. Print a sheet per kid or one per team before guests arrive and keep a pencil with each.

Cousins of different ages

Pair a big kid with a little one. The older cousin reads the list and keeps the pencil; the younger one gets to spot each thing and call it out. Teams of two keep a four-year-old and an eleven-year-old playing the same game instead of the older one racing off.

The thankful twist

Every time a team finds something, each player says one thing they're thankful for before they check it off. Keep it light: "the dog" and "pie" are perfect answers. At the table, each kid can share their favorite find and their favorite thankful answer.

Indoor or outdoor

The sample works inside any house on the day. If the weather is good, type 'a fall backyard' into the box labeled ‘Where are you doing this scavenger hunt?’ for a yard version: leaves, acorns, pine cones and something orange. Stay where a grown-up can see the kids, and keep everyone out of the kitchen while the oven is on.

  • Inside: a turkey picture, a pie, a family photo, a mug for cocoa.
  • Outside: three different leaves, an acorn, a pine cone, a bird.
  • At Grandma's: something older than Mom or Dad, something with a name on it.

Want a full treasure hunt instead?

A checklist is for spotting things. The HideQuest Treasure Hunt builder has a Thanksgiving theme, The Turkey Code: rhyming clues lead the cousins to hiding spots you choose, each child solves math matched to their own age, and their numbers add up to one Team Code that unlocks the last clue.

Frequently asked questions

What ages does it work for?

3–12. Little ones play with a big-kid partner or in Pre-Reader Mode (pictures instead of words); older kids can add Sneaky Math.

How long does it take?

It depends on the ages and how spread out the house is. If dinner is running late, ask teams to find all ten instead of seven.

Can we play it at someone else's house?

Yes. Most of the list is in any home on Thanksgiving Day. Walk the list quickly first and cross out anything the house doesn't have.

Is it really free?

Yes. No signup and no email. Print as many as you need.
